Moving from Switzerland
Moving from Switzerland to Cyprus: A Practical Relocation Guide
Switzerland is the one origin country where the tax case for Cyprus is not automatic. Low-tax cantons such as Zug and Schwyz can be competitive on income tax, and the Swiss franc buys a lot abroad. What changes is the cost base: Cypriot rent, health cover, insurance and everyday spending are a fraction of Swiss levels, and Cyprus has no wealth tax, no inheritance tax at federal or local level and a 17-year non-domicile exemption on dividends and interest. Switzerland is outside the EU, so the move runs on the EU–Swiss Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons rather than on EU citizenship, and Pillar 2 and Pillar 3a decisions must be made before you go. This guide covers the commune deregistration, both tax systems, what happens to your KVG policy, and where Swiss households tend to settle on the island.
At a glance
Why people make this move
The cost base falls sharply, even if tax does not
Rent, health insurance premiums, restaurants, services and childcare are all far cheaper than in Zurich, Geneva or Basel. For many Swiss households the saving comes from spending, not from the tax rate.
No wealth tax and no inheritance tax
Swiss cantons levy annual wealth tax on worldwide net assets and most levy inheritance tax outside the direct line. Cyprus has neither, which materially changes planning for households with portfolios or family property.
Non-domicile treatment of investment income
Cyprus exempts dividends and interest from the Special Defence Contribution for up to 17 years for non-domiciled residents, and does not tax most capital gains outside Cypriot immovable property. Switzerland already exempts private capital gains but taxes dividends and interest as income.
English as the working language, and no permit lottery
Business, banking, legal work and schooling run in English, and residence under the free movement agreement is a registration process rather than a quota-limited permit.

Key differences
What changes most
Switzerland is outside the EU
Your right to live in Cyprus comes from the EU–Swiss Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons if you are a Swiss or EU national. Non-EU family members need their own route, and customs treatment of your belongings is an import into the EU, not an internal EU move.
Your KVG policy ends and GESY begins
Swiss compulsory health insurance is bought individually from a private insurer and terminates when you leave. Cyprus uses GESY, funded by income-based contributions with a registered personal doctor as gatekeeper, alongside a substantial private sector.
Pillar 2 and Pillar 3a decisions are one-off and irreversible
Leaving Switzerland definitively opens withdrawal options for occupational and tied private pension savings, subject to rules on the mandatory portion and on withholding tax in the canton of the pension foundation. The choice you make is difficult or impossible to unwind.
No rail, no SBB, no dense public transport
There is no passenger rail and no metro in Cyprus. Households used to a GA travelcard will need a car per working adult.
Service standards and administration differ
Swiss punctuality, digital administration and contractor reliability set an unusually high baseline. Expect longer timelines, more in-person visits and more chasing in Cyprus.
A much smaller job market
Cyprus has depth in shipping, forex and fintech, IT, tourism and corporate services, concentrated in Limassol and Nicosia. Swiss salary levels do not exist here in any sector.
Practicalities
The nine things to sort out
Open any topic for the detail.
Registration and residency
Swiss residence is anchored in your commune's Einwohnerkontrolle or contrôle des habitants. Leaving means deregistering in person before departure and obtaining the Abmeldebestätigung, which insurers, pension foundations and tax authorities all ask for.
Swiss and EU nationals may enter and stay three months with a valid identity card or passport. Beyond that you apply for a Registration Certificate at the Civil Registry and Migration Department, normally within four months of arrival, evidencing employment, self-employment, or sufficient resources plus health cover. Non-EU, non-Swiss family members apply as family members of a beneficiary.
Deregister at the commune and keep the certificate. It is the document that unlocks the Pillar 2 and Pillar 3a process and closes the KVG policy without penalty.
Tax residency
Switzerland taxes residents at federal, cantonal and communal level on worldwide income and net wealth. Residence ends when you genuinely leave and deregister, and the final assessment is prorated by the canton. Swiss property and Swiss-source pensions can remain taxable in Switzerland, and lump-sum pension withdrawals are subject to withholding tax in the canton of the foundation, sometimes reclaimable under a treaty.
Cyprus treats you as resident after more than 183 days in a calendar year, with a 60-day alternative for people not tax resident elsewhere who have Cypriot employment, business or a directorship plus a permanent home available. The Switzerland–Cyprus double tax treaty, in force since 2015, allocates taxing rights.
Sequence the move and any pension withdrawal deliberately: the order in which you deregister, withdraw and become Cypriot tax resident changes the outcome. Take advice on both sides before either step.
Healthcare and insurance
Compulsory KVG or LAMal basic insurance bought from a private insurer, with high premiums, a chosen franchise and additional supplementary cover, plus accident cover through your employer.
GESY covers contributing residents with a personal doctor and small co-payments, and private cover is common for faster specialist access. Swiss AHV pensioners may be able to use an S1-equivalent arrangement, but Swiss cases are handled differently from EU ones and need checking with your insurer and the common institution.
Terminate the KVG policy with the Abmeldebestätigung rather than by simply cancelling, and hold private international cover for the gap before Cypriot contributions start.
Employment, freelancing and remote work
High salaries, comparatively light social contributions, AHV, IV and occupational pension deductions, and short notice periods by European standards.
Salaries are far below Swiss levels in every sector, including senior roles in shipping, forex and fintech, IT and corporate services. Working remotely for a Swiss employer changes where social security is due: coordination under the free movement agreement generally follows where the work is physically performed, which raises Cypriot payroll and permanent-establishment questions.
Do not assume a Swiss salary can simply continue from Cyprus. Get your employer's written position, and if you are self-employed plan the AHV deregistration.
Banking and moving money
Excellent digital banking, TWINT for everyday payments, and banks that often reclassify accounts as non-resident with new fees or minimum balances once you move abroad.
Account opening is document-heavy: proof of address, source of funds and usually the registration certificate or a stamped lease. There is no TWINT equivalent; cards and cash dominate and in-person visits are normal.
Ask your Swiss bank in writing what happens to each account, mortgage and e-banking login when you deregister, and open the Cypriot account early because the source-of-funds review takes time.
Shipping belongings and importing a car
Road groupage to an Italian or Adriatic port, then sea freight to Limassol. Transit is typically three to five weeks door to door.
Because Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, household goods enter as an import. Personal effects moved on transfer of normal residence can normally be relieved of duty and VAT where prior ownership and use conditions are met, but the paperwork matters. Cyprus drives on the left, so a Swiss left-hand-drive car remains awkward, and vehicle relief has its own conditions on top of local registration and roadworthiness testing.
Use a mover experienced with Swiss-to-EU transfer of residence, prepare a detailed valued inventory, and keep proof of ownership and prior use for anything valuable.
Renting or buying property
Tightly regulated tenancies with long notice periods, a rental deposit account, and a purchase market with high entry costs, amortisation rules and imputed rental value on owned homes.
Annual rental contracts with one to two months' deposit and far weaker tenant protection. Buying is open to EU and Swiss citizens on broadly equal terms, but due diligence rests on your own independent lawyer, including title deeds, planning permits and any developer mortgage.
Rent for the first year before buying, and if you keep Swiss property confirm how it is taxed once you are non-resident, including the effect on any mortgage terms.
Schools and childcare
Strong free public schooling in the cantonal language, an early-streamed system, and international schools among the most expensive in the world. Childcare is expensive and often scarce.
Public schools are free and taught in Greek. Most Swiss families choose English-language private or international schools with British or IB curricula, at a fraction of Zurich or Geneva fees. There is no Swiss-curriculum day school on the island, so plan for a language switch and check how the Matura pathway is replaced.
If your child is close to the Matura, ask schools directly how they will place them and which exit qualification results, then check Swiss university recognition of A-levels or the IB Diploma.
Moving with pets
Microchip and rabies vaccination are standard, with a Swiss pet passport recognised for travel into the EU.
Entry follows EU rules for movement from Switzerland: microchip, valid rabies vaccination after chipping and a recognised pet passport. Heat is the practical constraint and many airlines restrict hold travel in summer.
Move animals outside July and August where possible and check airline embargo dates before booking flights.
Cost of living
Cyprus vs Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Zug
| Category | Switzerland | Cyprus | In Cyprus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent (2-bed, decent area) | Zurich and Geneva are among the most expensive rental markets in Europe, with low vacancy and long application queues. | Even Limassol, the island's most expensive market, sits far below Zurich; Paphos, Larnaca and Nicosia are cheaper again. | Lower |
| Health insurance | Individual KVG premiums per person plus franchise and supplementary cover, a major fixed household cost. | Income-based GESY contributions with small co-payments, plus optional private cover at modest premiums. | Lower |
| Groceries | Among the most expensive in Europe, even at Migros and Coop own-brand level. | Local produce, fish and halloumi are good value; imported brands carry a premium but remain below Swiss prices. | Lower |
| Transport | World-class rail and city networks, with the GA or Halbtax making a car optional for many households. | No rail and limited buses. Budget for a car per working adult, though purchase, fuel and insurance are cheaper than in Switzerland. | Similar |
| Income tax | Varies enormously: Geneva and Vaud are heavy, Zug and Schwyz are light, and all cantons add wealth tax. | Progressive rates with a €22,000 tax-free band from 2026, plus non-dom exemption on dividends and interest. | Similar |
| Wealth and inheritance tax | Annual cantonal and communal wealth tax on worldwide net assets, with inheritance tax in most cantons outside the direct line. | No wealth tax and no inheritance tax. | Lower |
| Schools and childcare | Excellent free public schools, but international schools and daycare are exceptionally expensive. | International school fees are a fraction of Swiss levels; private nurseries are unsubsidised but far cheaper. | Lower |
| Eating out | Very expensive, with even casual dining at high price points. | Tavernas are excellent value; premium Limassol venues still sit below Zurich prices. | Lower |

What people underestimate6 honest warnings
The Pillar 2 decision is worth more than the tax rate
Withdrawing occupational pension savings on definitive departure triggers withholding tax in the canton of the foundation, and the mandatory portion has its own rules. Getting the sequence and the destination right is usually the largest single number in the whole move.
Leaving the EU customs union changes the shipment
Swiss household goods are an import into the EU. Relief on transfer of residence is available where the conditions are met, but it needs a proper inventory and evidence of ownership, unlike a simple intra-EU move.
Against a low-tax canton, income tax may not improve
Cyprus is a clear gain against Geneva or Vaud, but close to neutral against Zug or Schwyz on salary alone. The reliable gains are wealth tax, inheritance tax and non-dom treatment of dividends and interest.
Swiss income does not simply continue
Remote work for a Swiss employer moves the social security and payroll position to Cyprus once the work is performed here, and many Swiss employers refuse rather than restructure.
Service and build quality expectations
Swiss standards for tradespeople, insulation and finishing are not the norm here. Inspect properties in person and budget for shading, air conditioning servicing and remedial work.
Winter comfort indoors
Single glazing, tiled floors and no central heating make a 12°C January evening feel worse than a heated Swiss flat. Ask specifically what heating a property has.
Swiss-specific issues to resolveSwiss specifics
Commune deregistration is the gateway document
Deregistering in person at the Einwohnerkontrolle or contrôle des habitants ends your Swiss residence for tax, closes the KVG policy without penalty and unlocks the pension process. Do it before you leave and keep several copies of the Abmeldebestätigung.
Pillar 2, Pillar 3a and withholding tax
On definitive departure you may withdraw tied pension savings, subject to the rules restricting cash payment of the mandatory occupational portion when you move to an EU or EFTA state with compulsory insurance. Payments are taxed at source in the canton of the foundation, and the Switzerland–Cyprus treaty may allow a reclaim. Choose the foundation's canton and the timing deliberately, and confirm the Cypriot treatment before you draw anything.
AHV, IV and the Swiss pension itself
AHV pensions are generally payable abroad, and contribution years remain credited. Voluntary continued contributions from outside the EU and EFTA are restricted, so ask the compensation office what your options are, and check with the treaty which country taxes the pension when it starts.
Retained Swiss property and cantonal tax
Swiss real estate stays taxable in Switzerland after you leave, including at cantonal and communal level, and imputed rental value or actual rental income rules continue. Mortgage terms may change for non-residents, so ask your bank in writing before you deregister.
Sources and disclaimer
Rules change and depend on your circumstances. This is not tax, legal or immigration advice, confirm anything financial or legal with a qualified professional.
FAQ
Common questions
Can I move to Cyprus if I am Swiss rather than an EU citizen?
Yes. Swiss nationals rely on the EU–Swiss Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, which gives broadly the same rights of residence as EU citizens. You may stay three months with a valid identity card or passport, then apply for a Registration Certificate at the Civil Registry and Migration Department, showing employment, self-employment, or sufficient resources plus health cover.
What happens to my Pillar 2 pension when I leave?
Definitive departure opens the options of withdrawal, transfer to a vested benefits foundation or leaving the funds invested. Cash payment of the mandatory portion is restricted when you move to a state where you are compulsorily insured, payments are taxed at source in the canton of the foundation, and the Switzerland–Cyprus treaty may permit a reclaim. Take specific advice before drawing anything.
When do I stop being tax resident in Switzerland?
When you genuinely leave and deregister at your commune, with the cantonal assessment prorated to your departure date. Swiss property and certain Swiss-source payments remain taxable in Switzerland. Cyprus normally treats you as resident after 183 days, with a 60-day alternative.
Will I pay less tax in Cyprus than in Switzerland?
It depends on your canton and your income mix. Against Geneva, Vaud or Basel the gain is usually clear. Against Zug or Schwyz, salary taxation can be similar, and the reliable advantages are the absence of wealth tax and inheritance tax and the non-domicile exemption on dividends and interest.
What happens to my KVG health insurance?
Compulsory basic insurance ends when your Swiss residence ends, and insurers require the deregistration certificate to close the policy. In Cyprus working residents contribute to GESY and register with a personal doctor. Pensioners should check with their insurer and the Swiss common institution what cross-border cover applies in their case.
Can I keep working for my Swiss employer from Cyprus?
Sometimes, but it must be arranged. Social security coordination generally follows where the work is physically performed, so contributions can become due in Cyprus, and the employer may face a permanent-establishment question. Get the position in writing before you move.
Do I pay customs duty on my household goods?
Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, so the shipment is an import. Personal effects moved on transfer of normal residence can normally be relieved of duty and VAT where the conditions on prior ownership and use are met. Prepare a detailed valued inventory and use a mover experienced with Swiss-to-EU transfers.
Is there Swiss or German-language schooling in Cyprus?
There is limited German-language provision and no Swiss-curriculum day school. Most Swiss families choose English-language private or international schools offering British or IB pathways, at a fraction of Zurich or Geneva fees. Check Swiss university recognition of the exit qualification if you may return.
Should I ship my Swiss car?
Often not, since Cyprus drives on the left and Swiss used cars sell well at home. If you do, vehicle relief on transfer of residence has conditions on prior ownership and use, and local registration and roadworthiness testing still apply.
Will my AHV pension be paid in Cyprus?
Yes, AHV pensions are generally payable abroad, and your Swiss contribution years remain credited. Which country taxes the pension is determined by the Switzerland–Cyprus treaty and depends on the type of pension, so confirm your own case before you rely on a figure.
